HOW I DO - SANTOSHI MA VRAT PUJA

Letter to Daughter · Post HOW I DO PUJA - SUNDAY Posting as Nithya Nathan

Dear, I am giving herebelow the procedure for Santoshi Ma Puja. The procedure is little elaborate. If you are short of time just chant Gayatri mantra of Santoshi Mata and offer naivedyam. Since it falls on Friday you can read sri sukhtam. I have avoided the story (Katha) part since I find it very negative. Sitting in front of God I don't want to say any negative things. My mother-in-law was good and she loved me. In the diya lighting mantra I have changed the third line. Originally it was satru durbuddhi naasaaya. I don't want to pray for destroying satru buddhi. I believe in Loka samasta sukhino bhavantu. So I changed it to Su Buddhi abhivridaaya meaning let good buddhi increases. I have added Tamil namavali after english transliteration of Hindi ashtothra namavali. I know you will not be able to read but since I found it in web I have added that. Om Namo Vishnu Om Namo Vishnu Om Namo Vishnu Apavitrah pavitro va Sarava avastham gato pi va Yah smaret pundarikaksm sa bahya abhyantarah suchi

Rama Navami

Lord Rama was born on Sukhla Paksha, Navami Thithi of Chitrai month in Punarvasu nakshatram. Lord Rama was born during Madhyana period which is middle of Hindu day Madhyana which prevails for six Ghatis (approximately 2 hours and 24 minutes) is the most auspicious time to perform Rama Navami Puja rituals. The mid-point of Madhyana marks the moment when Shri Rama was born. The chanting of Shri Rama and celebration reaches its peak during this time.

This year Smartha Rama Navami falls on Thursday, the 21st April 2021

Navami Tithi Begins = 12:43am on 21/Apr/2021
Navami Tithi Ends = 12:35am on 22/Apr/2021

Rama Navami Puja Muhurta = 10:19am to 12:52pm

Duration = 2 Hours 34 Mins

Rama Navami Madhyahna Moment = 11:40am

Simple short Rama Navami Puja

I want to share short description of Rama Navami Puja.

Clean the Sri Ramar photo, put chandan and kumkum and put garland to it. Prepare Akshadai (unbroken raw rice 1 tsp mixed with 1/4 tsp turmeric powder and few drops of water), Neer Mor, Panakam, Payasam and vadai. Fruits, Betel leaf and nut also required.  Panakam and Neer Mor (Recipe given at the end) are must. Light two diya (one for aarti).  Burn insense sticks.
First read the sankalpam for 13th April 2019

If short of time skip Sankalpam and read from Rama Gayatri
We should purify ourselves before doing any puja. First we take Lord Vishnu's name and say the following slokas.

Om Achyuthaya namaha Om Anantaya namaha Om Govindaya namaha

Om Apavitrah Pavitro Vā Sarva-Avasthām Gato-[A]pi Vā |
Yah Smaret-Punnddariikākssam Sa Bāhya-Abhyantarah Shucih ||

(Meaning of the Sloka: One might be in whatever state whether pure or impure if he remembers Pundarikaksha (Lotus eyed Vishnu) he becomes pure outwardly and also inwardly. By reciting this slokas we become symbolically pure and fit for doing puja.)

Akshaya Tritiya

This year Akshaya Tritiya falls on 14th May 2021.  It is celebrated on the sukhla tritiya of Chittirai month of Tamil Panchangam. It coincides with the nakshatram 'Rohini' (upto 5:45am)the star of Lord Krishna. ‘Akshaya’ means in Sanskrit means never diminishing. Hence the day of Akshaya Tritiya is believed to bring success and good luck which never diminishes. So people try to do all the good things which they want never to be diminished in their life.

Mahurat of Akshaya Tritiya

Tritiya begins at 05:39am on 14h May 2021
Tritiya ends at 05:00am on 15th May 2021

Auspicious time : May 14, 05:40 to 12:17 PM

Duration = 6 Hours 37 Mins

Yugadi, Akshaya Tritiya and Vijaya Dashami are the three days which are so auspicious and free from all malefic effects that starting new ventures need no checking any muhurtam.

In Tamil they say (கொடுத்து வச்சாத்தான் கிடைக்கும்)Kodutthu vaichhaathaan kidaikkum which means if we had given before (invested) we can get it now.

So let us see what can be invested during this auspicious time:

  • Investment in gold. Everybody knows that the value of gold will increase only.
  • Starting a business, starting a new class, learning a new sloka
  • Investment in good deeds.  Giving alms, food to the needy.  So we will ever be in a position to give.
  • Expressing gratefulness to God for the all the blessing he has bestowed on us.

Important Events on Akshaya Tritiya

  • The Treta Yuga began
  • Ganesha started writing the epic Mahabharata to Ved Vyas’s dictation.
  • The river Ganges, the most sacred river of India descended to the Earth from the heaven.
  • Lord Parusurama, the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu and Hayagreeva had incarnated.

  • Goddess Annapurna, the goddess of Food who is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati takes birth on the propitious day of Akshaya Tritiya.
  • Lord Krishna gave Akshaya Patra to Pandavas on this day.

CHITRA POURNAMI

Chitra Pournami
It is observed on the day of the full moon in the month of Chithirai or Chaitra and mostly coinciding with the star chitra.
The festival is dedicated to god Chitraguptan, assistant to Lord Yaman. He maintains the record of the good and bad deeds ( physical, mental or verbal)  done by each individual for Lord Yaman (God of death and the custodian of the Dharmam. When one dies his soul goes to Lord Yama and according to the reports of Chitraguptan future punishment at heaven or hell is decided.  Sometimes punishment is carried forward to the next birth.

Story of birth of Chitraguptan
Once Parameswar the greatest of the Lords and his consort Parameswari  thought about recording the good and bad deeds done by each individual during his life span for award of results.  Goddess  Parvati drew a picture on the golden slate and the picture was given life by Lord Siva.  He was given the name Chitragupta and responsibility of recording the minures of the work done by each individual.   He is the Devata for planet Kethu. Worshipping Chitra Gupta on this day would ward of kedhu dhosha in one's horoscope.  There is only one Chitraguptaswamy temple in South India at Kanchipuram. In the temple the idol of Chitraguptaswamu holds a bunch of palm leaves in the left hand and metallic pen in the right hand.  Maa Karmelikai is the consort of Lord Chitragupta.  On Chitra Pournami  devotees ask Chitragupta to forgive their past sins and  to resolve not to make further sins. Many devotees bathe in rivers or other water bodies to symbolise their sins being washed away.

(Kārthigai)

Kārthikai Deepam

Kārthigai deepam celebrated on the Pournami day in the month of Karthigai, is a very important festival celebrated in Tamilnadu. There is an interesting story behind it. It was in a playful mood that the mother Goddess closed the eyes of Lord Shiva from behind, when the entire world lost light and was immersed in darkness; when the left and right eyes were closed, the Sun and the Moon lost their light; when the third eye was closed Agni lost his heat with the touch of the mother's hand. The world lost grace and was filled with darkness. Everyone was in fear.
This angered the Lord and told her that even though this was done playfully, it was a big mistake and cursed the Devi. He bade her to go to Earth and "perform penance till the time I come to you". It is at the Annamalai [Tiruvannamalai], where the Goddess undertook her penance and was blessed with the Lord Shiva's grace and became a part of his self [the left part].
It is during the Kārthigai month that the penance was undertaken and was blessed on the the Kārthigai day. She beseeched the Lord that like "you graced me in the form of light, you have to bless the world every year on this day".

December - January
(Mārgaḷi)

Ārudrā Darisanam

Mārgali Thiruvāthirai occurs in conjunction with the full moon and the star Ardrā. This festival of Nataraja Chidambaram is a ten day festival.
The festival is considered to symbolize the performance of five-fold functions done by Lord Shiva for uplifting all souls. Unlike this Shiva Linga, in any other temple for whom Abhisheka is performed several times a day, all the days of the year, only 6 Abhishekas are performed in a year for Nataraja anywhere.Lord Nataraja recognized the devotion of Sendan and to honor him, came to his house as a mendicant and was ate the humble gruel or kali. Lord ate well and took off what was left in the house saying that he wanted it for the next meal. Lord Nataraja appeared in the king’s dream and told him that he had been to the hut of Sendan to partake of his kali. The poor Sendan was honored. Sendan (Saint Sendanar) sang a Pallandu poem on Lord Nataraja.
From that day, the offering of Kali to Nataraja and the singing of the Pallandu song become the rule in every temple and in every home.

VISHU PUNYAKAALAM

As the year Vikari starts at 2:25 pm on 14th April 2019 the VISHU is celebrated the next day.

On the eve of Vishu day i.e. on the night of 14th April we clean one wooden palagai (wooden slab connected by two timbers) and put kolam on it. We keep one big mirror upright on the rear end. We put gold chains and flower garland on the mirror. In one brass plate or banana leaf we arrange the following:
  • One Kuththuvilakku (brass lamp with five face)
  • Image of God
  • Blossoms of Laburnum tree
  • Money usually bowl full of gold coins, silver coins and nickel coins,
  • Rice and Tuwar daal in silver cups,
  • Summer Vegetables like Raw mango, Jackfruit, cucumber, Vellari cucumber, Raw Turmeric bulbs, Pumpkin, Ridge Gourd, Drumsticks, coconut cut open, etc. Traditionally the vegetables grown in their own garden are used. Nowadays we use market bought.
  • Fruits like Bananas, Mangoes, Grapes, Apples, Oranges etc
  • New clothes
  • Betel leaves and arecanut
The lady of the house gets up early and lights the kuththuvilakku and guides other members (with closed eyes) of the family to the puja room. Each member sees the mirror and sees his face on the mirror. It is a lovely sight. Sight of the God image, his or her image appearing decorated with garlands and gold chain and all the bounties.

Younger people prostrates ie does namaskaarams to elders to show their regard and elders blesses them and gives vishukani a token of money.

Then we bath and put on new clothes and do puja at home little elaborately with lots of flowers and garlands. After that we visit temples especially Guruvayurappan Temple.
